ABOUT
One afternoon, Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline’s door bearing a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn’t been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. As these two let down their guards and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks a much deeper mystery that has brought them together. I and You is an ode to youth, life, love, and the strange beauty of human connectedness.
REVIEWS
“...sharp and funny. Gunderson taps into a buoyant spirit...the touching 'barbaric yawp’ of these two deeply engaging kids.” —Washington Post.
“By the close, Gunderson has guided us toward a sublime transfiguration that encompasses Leaves of Grass, John Coltrane, Jerry Lee Lewis, space and time, bodies and spirits, death and rebirth.” —The New Yorker.
“...a validation of the human experience, and of the triumph of life over death. Gunderson’s gift is the best thing a play can offer: we might be better people after seeing it.” —DC Theatre Scene.

"...and your very flesh shall be a great poem"
- Walt Whitman
I was approached by Josh and Alyssa last year with a question I am often asked by young actors and budding producers. "We found this play. How do we put it on?" I was so struck by their dedication, focus and genuine passion that I asked them to read the play for me. I knew absolutely nothing about it, so was going in cold. Over zoom, I sat in my living room watching and listening to these two young actors read the words of playwright Lauren Gunderson and of course, the words of Walt Whitman. As I listened, memories of my own life started to swirl up inside of me; the years I have lived with an incurable, chronic and life-altering illness and the pain and stress my illness has put on my family and loved ones. I was reminded how difficult it can be to plan for the future, to give yourself permission to dream- to find hope amongst the darkness and then, at some point, to imagine a new reality. But also, and perhaps even more profoundly, what really moved me was the love in this play. The love of life. How we find joy in the little things, which then of course, become the big things. This is so beautifully expressed in Gunderson’s play. I listened as Alyssa spoke the words of Caroline, as she expressed her joy of music, art and animals, her compassion for others and her dreams. Caroline’s lust for life was so vivid it hurt my heart. Caroline is a young girl who, whilst faced with a terrifying reality, wants nothing more than to live. To seize the day, if you will. And then, one afternoon, a young man enters her life and helps her remember her strength. Over the course of 75 minutes, I fell in love with these two characters and everything they share together. I am honoured to have been trusted with this play and have adored working with these two young, emerging artists. It’s been a privilege to be reunited with some treasured creatives I have worked with before and to develop new working relationships and friendships. I am very grateful this project came along when it did. The last time I was gearing up to open a show at Belvoir, the world stopped for a horrific virus. It’s good to be back. Carpe Diem.
